Part-Time Dental Assisting Instructor (Pool)


FLSA Status: Exempt

Salary Schedule: Placement on the adjunct faculty salary schedule is based upon education and credited experience. Pending any course assignment, initial placement can range as follows: Lab Course (Salary Schedule HB) - $89.20 up to $130.94 per hour. Lecture Course (Salary Schedule AJ) - $103.85 up to $151.07.

The duties below are representative of the duties of the classification and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed by the incumbent(s) of any particular position. Duties and Responsibilities

1. Provide instruction in Dental Assisting.
2. Implement skill building in the Dental Assisting lab setting.
3. Prepare class assignments and course work.
4. Grade student work.
5. Record and post grades in a timely fashion.
6. Report to the lead instructor as needed.
7. Consult with students during regularly scheduled office hours.
8. Participate in Dental Assisting team, department, and division meetings.
9. Assist in curriculum development and revision.
10. Perform other duties as required by contract, collective bargaining agreements, and general institutional needs.

Employment Standards (acquired through education, training, and/or experience)
Knowledge of:

1. Dental assisting, including recent experience and/or concurrent employment in a dental office.
2. Current dental assisting issues and trends.
3. The use of computer-based technology appropriate to the dentistry industry and the willingness to expand its use.
4. A variety of successful teaching techniques.

Skills and Abilities:

1. Willing to update skills if needed.
2. Maintain licensure by attending continuing education classes or home study courses.
3. Teach in areas as assigned. These positions may require assignment to evenings or weekends.
4. Willing to actively participate and contribute to changes in the Dental Assisting program at department and team meetings.
5. Commitment to staying abreast of new trends, techniques, and materials in dental assisting.
6. Commitment to supporting gender and ethnically diverse students enrolled in dental assisting.
7. Ensure consistent and appropriate monitoring of student progress.
8. Use teaching methods that engage students actively in their learning and encourage them to learn problem-solving skills.
9. Adapt teaching methodology to meet the needs of an ethnically and culturally diverse group of students.
10. Assist students in acquiring, analyzing, and evaluating knowledge and skills in dental assisting.
11. Willing to work with faculty and staff in a spirit of collegiality at department, division, college, and District levels.
12. Reflect on and evaluate the effectiveness of one's pedagogy and modify techniques to engage students.
13. Commitment to the SMCCCD goal of integrating writing skills across the curriculum.
14. Commitment to the goals and ideals of the teaching profession and enthusiasm for the mission of the community college.

Job Requirements:

• Any bachelor's degree or higher and two years of related professional experience, OR any associate degree and six years of related professional experience, OR the equivalent (see below). Professional experience is required when the applicant possesses a master's degree.
• Current California Registered Dental Assistant license (in good standing)
• Current national Certified Dental Assistant license (in good standing)
• Current CPR certification
• Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice both within and outside of the classroom

a) Degree Equivalence
The employee or applicant possesses a degree(s) with similar content to those listed for the relevant discipline. The name of the degree is close to that specified on the Disciplines List but the degree either has a different title or area of expertise or the coursework is slightly different. Equivalence is established through analysis of transcripts and coursework.

b) Academic Background Equivalence
Related to disciplines in which a Master's degree is not generally expected or available. The employee or applicant must have completed at least 24 semester units (or equivalent) of coursework in the academic field being applied for, and must possess at least the equivalent level of achievement and the equivalent in breadth, depth of understanding, and rigor in each of the following:

i. a broad cultural education usually met by the general education requirements for any Bachelor's or Associate's degree, and

ii. a detailed study of the discipline in breadth, depth, and rigor, usually met by coursework required for the degree major.

c) Professional Achievement Equivalence
The employee or applicant must have completed the general education requirements for any Bachelor's or Associate's degree, and show evidence of outstanding professional achievement and/or substantial training in the requested field. The employee or applicant must submit substantial evidence, which demonstrates that their preparation, teaching experience, work experience, and ability are equivalent to those expected from a person who meets the minimum qualifications.
